Actors and technicians in the Tamil film industry will shift from receiving a full upfront remuneration to a profit-and-loss sharing model with producers, if a resolution proposed by the Tamil Film Producers Council (TFPC) comes to fruition.
Kollywood stars are particularly infamous for demanding huge fees. The likes of Vijay, Ajith, Sivakarthikeyan, Dhanush and Rajinikanth receive humongous amounts. Budgets have shot up enormously in recent years, while the visual quality of Tamil films has been on the decline. In this context, the latest proposal is radical.
It's least likely that the actors will succumb to the wishes of Tamil producers. Kollywood is an industry with a paucity of stars. When supply is less and demand is more (thanks to Red Giant and other backers ready to finance any damn story), it's but natural that the actors will put a premium on their services. The exit of Vijay will further increase the leverage of Ajith, for example.
The Telugu film industry has made repeated proposals to convince or compel the Tollywood star heroes out there to size down their fees. After each such proposal, months later, the very same producers start saying that norms can't be imposed and things have to be worked on a case-by-case basis by producers themselves, depending on their personal rapport with the star they are working with. Nobody wants to offend the stars because it's they who call the shots!
