The other day, distributors of a Sankranthi release said that most distributors lose money on most movies. Even so-called hit movies give them a commission of no more than 20% (that is, if they don't incur losses).
After distributors, it is the turn of producers to complain. In a recent interview, a producer said that only 35-39% of the gross collections is what the producers receive. The rest goes towards GST, etc. The arrangement between multiplexes and producers is that 50% of the ticket price goes to the former.
After distributors and producers, only heroes are left now. If they too can kindly come out and state that they get very little, we can arrive at the genius-level conclusion that everyone toils to make the audience entertained for three hours. Our three-hour entertainment is the only thing that keeps the selfless Tollywood motivated.
By the way, films "don't make much" but remunerations multiply. Budgets go up exponentially in this industry. Fifteen years back, a budget of Rs 50 Cr would be seen as huge. Today, this is a 'jujube' figure for big producers.
