Bollywood's Upset: Small Films Outshine Big Stars Online

Acclaimed movies in Hindi are outcompeting big-star movies. This is atypical of Bollywood.

In the list of the Most Searched Indian Movies on Google in the year 2024, '12th Fail' and the much-feted 'Laapataa Ladies' outdid several biggies like Aamir Khan's 'Laal Singh Chadhha', Shah Rukh Khan's 'Dunki', and the multi-starrer 'Singham Returns'. Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao's blockbuster 'Stree 2' stands at No. 1, which is understandable given its multi-billion rupee blockbuster status. The other two Hindi movies are at No. 3 and No. 4, just next to Prabhas' 'Kalki 2898 AD'.

'12th Fail' finding more online traction than ultra-popular movies like Allu Arjun's 'Pushpa 2' is a surprise. 'Laapataa Ladies' being more popular than Hrithik Roshan's 'Fighter' is another interesting takeaway. Films like Alia Bhatt's 'Jigra' have been dominated by Malayalam movies like 'Aavesham'.

The Malayalam blockbuster 'Manjummel Boys' (No. 7) did better than Thalapathy Vijay's 'The GOAT' (No. 8). And Vijay Sethupathi's 'Maharaja' (No. 6) did better than 'Manjummel Boys'.
