Bold Shift: Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Neeraja Kona to break stereotypes as directors

Varalaxmi Sarathkumar's Saraswathi is her recently announced directorial debut, in which she will also star and produce. While the plot details for Saraswathi are not fully released, it is billed as a high-concept thriller and is set to feature a cast including Prakash Raj, Priyamani, and Naveen Chandra. The title poster hints at an intense and suspenseful theme.

It is interesting that a female filmmaker is breaking out of the mold to debut not with a soft rom-com but a thriller.

Coincidentally, another female director now wants to buck the trend. Neeraja Kona's second movie will be a "bold" one with unexpected elements. "It is anything but soft. I am excited for my next movie," the debut director of Telusu Kada said. Telusu Kada, starring Siddu Jonnalagadda, is going to be a love story.

In the Indian film industry, only a few female directors have really tried to break conventions. Sudha Kongara, Zoya Akhtar and Farah Khan come to mind. Will Neeraja Kona and Varalaxmi Sarathkumar join the league?
