By saying that the songs of Game Changer failed to reach their full potential because no song had a memorable hook step, music director Thaman has opened a can of worms. You can see it as his way of taking a swipe at filmmaker Shankar, or an indication that he has been made the fall guy for the failure of the album. The buzz is that Game Changer's music rights resulted in heavy losses for a music label.
Recently, appearing on a dance show, Thaman praised a young girl for inventing new dance moves for Jaragandi Jaragandi song. "Wish the actual song in Game Changer had these dance moves," Thaman remarked.
It is really impossible to disagree with him. There was a time when director Shankar used to be the best in the world when it comes to picturizing and visualizing songs. AR Rahman's songs attained immortal status many times. But, with time, Shankar has lost his magical touch. His choreographers don't push themselves hard.
For that matter, no contemporary Tamil director knows how to film commercial songs with a traditional structure. Lokesh Kanagaraj's songs work because they are montages. Otherwise, he has no proven track record. Not just Shankar, even Mani Ratnam has given up on traditional song formats. The less said about other Tamil directors, the better. None of them even deserves a mention.
If you have great tunes, don't waste them on Tamil and Hindi directors. Give them to Telugu filmmakers like Rajamouli, Trivikram and Sandeep Vanga.
