The 2011 blockbuster Enthiran (dubbed as Robot in Telugu) starred Superstar Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Rai in lead roles. Director Shankar has been fighting a plagiarism case in connection with the movie for the past many years. A writer named Aarur Tamilnadan moved a court in Tamil Nadu, stating that the story of Enthiran bears resemblances to his own story, Jiguba.

In a shocking turn of events, the Enforcement Directorate has invoked certain provisions of the PMLA Act on the grounds that Shankar might have violated certain provisions under the Copyright Act, 1957. Since the director received remuneration to the tune of Rs 11.50 Cr as per account books, his assets worth the equivalent of the remuneration have now been attached.

Shankar has previously fought against a production house over delays in the completion of Indian 2. The project had to be completed at the cost of delaying Ram Charan's Game Changer. Shankar's next is Indian 3, which is in the post-production phase. He will also be doing a film named Velpari. The Hindi remake of Anniyan (Aparichitudu) has been shelved.
