Baapu is slated to hit the cinemas this Friday (February 21st). The film has been described by writer-director Daya as a "powerful story of a farmer’s struggles, sacrifices, and fight for survival". Starring Brahmaji and Aamani as a couple, this one has Sudhakar Reddy (the actor who played Komarayya in Balagam) in a pivotal role. DhanyaBalaKrishna, Srinivas Avasarala and others have played different roles.
While the makers are confident that the film will be a sleeper hit, the talk from an early premiere is that the film is devoid of a soul. An immoral decision made by some key characters anchors the story. There was so much potential to be derived from the premise. The intention was ostensibly to make a black comedy but the uneven characterizations leave much to be desired.
The writing's superficiality and oddly humorous tone prevent any real emotional connection with the events.
Produced by Raju and Bhanu Prasad Reddy, the film has music by RR Dhruvan. The cinematography is by Vasu Pendem. Edited by Aalayam Anil, the production design is by Sripal Macharla.
