Sodara Short Review: Nobody can save Sampoornesh Babu

In Sodara (alternatively spelt as Sodharaa), Sampoornesh Babu comes across as a parodic actor even when he is mouthing serious lines in serious sentimental scenes. No matter how much he tries, he seems to be spoofing the ultra-emotional characters from the '80s-era Telugu cinema. The hangover of Kobbari Matta is so strong that you would want to pity him for not being able to overcome the bane of that spoofy entertainer.

Sampoornesh plays a soda-maker in a small village. When his younger brother (Sanjosh) falls in love with his classmate, a quirk of fate ensues. Lots of confusion and a heartbreak later, the two brothers eventually get to relax.

Getup Srinu is the only artist who seems to be capable of performing in the movie. Even the otherwise talented Babu Mohan (yes, the star comedian from the 1990s) is reduced to being a caricature. Baba Shankar hams effortlessly.

The main female lead is a totally brain-dead woman. She literally loves Sanjosh's character after he insults her before their classmates and royally screws her exam results. She sees fun and innocence in all of this!

The depiction of village life in Sodara is close to reality, though. The lives of the rural characters revolve around just one thing: settling down by somehow marrying some or the other suitable match, and thoroughly indulging in hedonic activities. There is also an astrologer to tell them that everything is predestined. India's soul is in its villages.
