'Ghilli': Re-release collections set a challenging benchmark for Telugu

'Ghilli', the Tamil-language film, is a remake of Mahesh Babu's 'Okkadu'. The film was re-released the other day across theatres in Tamil Nadu and a few countries. It grossed a whopping number, setting a new benchmark of sorts among re-releases. While the re-release trend was started by Tollywood, ironically, Tamil cinema is ahead of Telugu.

In a statement, distributor Sakthivel said, "The footfalls are overwhelming. If the movie had been a regular release on a festival date and the ticket prices were Rs. 200 to 250 instead of Rs.120, the film would have grossed Rs. 25-30 Cr."

The supreme success of the re-release goes to show that Tamil cinema has been starved of exciting entertainers. Tamil directors are fizzling out after doing a couple of movies. Only the likes of Lokesh Kanagaraj have been able to thrive but they don't make entertainers.
