High Court issues notice to Vishal over 'Chakra'

'Chakra' has landed in trouble ahead of its OTT release. The Madras High Court on Wednesday issued notices to actor-producer Vishal and the film's director, MS Anandam.

The controversy has its roots in the 2019 action film 'Action', which starred Vishal as a colonel. It was produced by R Ravindran of Trident Arts. As per Ravindran, the film's budget exceeded the planned figure and hit the Rs 44 Cr mark. The producer in his petition to the High Court claimed that it was on the basis of an assurance given by Vishal that he spent Rs 44 Cr.

What was the assurance? Vishal allegedly promised the producer that he will do a film for Trident Arts should 'Action' make less than Rs 20 Cr. The film, directed by Sundar C, made not more than Rs 12 Cr in Tamil and Telugu.

So, 'Chakra' was planned to be done by Vishal for Trident Arts to make good the loss suffered because of 'Action'. However, Vishal went on to produce the film himself.

Vishal would now have to pay Rs 8 Cr (the difference) to Trident Arts. If not, 'Chakra' shouldn't be released is the producer's contention in the petition.
