Yester year Bollywood playback singer Shamshad Begum is no more. She was 94. The versatile singer passed away on Tuesday night (April 23, 2013) at her residence in Mumbai due to prolonged illness. Shamshad is a renowned Bollywood singer whose songs from 1940s to 1970s are still one of the top priorities in the playlist of Indian music lovers. Born in Amritsar, Punjab, Shamshad Begum set a new benchmark with her singing style and sang over 6000 songs in Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi, Bengali and Tamil. Although she remained behind the camera due to the promise given to her father that she would not appear in front of the camera, she could grab the people’s attention with her crystal clear voice.
