After the OTT game became dominant in 2020, the satellite market for movies has come down crashing. This has been pointed out by many Tollywood producers in recent years. For most movies, OTT deals are the only go, given that the rate at which theatrical disasters are happening has only increased.
How is the situation in Bollywood? It's bad even there. As per senior analyst and Bollywood journalist Himesh Mankad, there is a massive slowdown in the satellite market for Hindi-language movies. "A revamp on the way for the economics of films, as the satellite world has literally come down crashing to amounts as low in the window of Rs 5 crore to Rs 25 crore. The Rs 25 crore cap is for some of the blockbusters of Hindi Cinema. Digital players are also in the course-correction mode, as prices for acquisitions are seeing a dip," he writes.
