Monisha Unni breathed her last on December 5, 1992 when she was all of 21. At that time, she was a superstar actress in Malayalam cinema.

Her tragic death in a road accident happened at a time when she was collaborating with some of the biggest Malayalam filmmakers and was getting popular in Kollywood as well. It was at the young age of 16 that she became a recipient of the National Film Award for Best Actress for her performance in Nakhakshathangal (1986). She remains the youngest actress in the country to win a National Award.

The likes of MT Vasudevan Nair, Hariharan, Priyadarshan, Ajayan, Kamal and Sibi Malayil, respected names in Mollywood, worked with her. "Monisha had an innate passion for dancing and went for professional training at the age of five. She delivered a two hours solo dance performance on ‘Shiva Varnam’ at the age of nine and it was her first stage performance too," a ToI article once wrote.

In an interview a couple of years back, Monisha's mother, Sreedevi Unni, said that she suspects the driver of their Ambassador car had dozed off for a second because of which the accident took place.
