Chiranjeevi, Balakrishna vs. Aamir Khan: A Tale of Two Compensation Models

Aamir Khan recently stated that he hasn’t charged salary for his films in the last 20 years. Right after films like Lagaan, he started asking for a share in profits. "My films get made in Rs 10-20 Cr, because they aren’t burdened by my fees," the Bollywood superstar said. The intent behind the model is to let himself experiment.

If you want to do regular commercial films like Salman Khan does, you don't need the profit-sharing model. You can demand Rs 50 Cr upfront and have nothing to do with the box office fate of your movie.

This model hasn't been replicated by anybody in Telugu cinema - simply because they don't need to. You can excuse young actors who are just building their empire to go for the remuneration model instead of profit-sharing, but superstars like Chiranjeevi and Balakrishna in their 60s not showing any inclination for experimentation is strange. It's obvious that they are in the Salman Khan mould and that's why they don't have to make any sacrifices. The Telugu superstars don't need to take risks when their only goal is to act in safe projects like Waltair Veerayya and Bhagavanth Kesari.

Since the Aamir Khan model exists and two decades of experience is there for all to learn from, there is ideally no justification for doing only safe projects. But then, why bother to push the envelope when producers are falling head over heels to pay you fat paychecks?
