YouTuber and podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia aka Beer Biceps is likely to be arrested soon. He recently made obscene comments involving incestuous sex on a comedy show. His controversial "joke" about watching parents having sex has sparked widespread outrage. A day after Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis commented on the issue, the controversy reached the Parliament today.
A viewpoint has arisen that the Government of India could use the occasion to frame a legislation to curb OTT, social media and other digital content in the country. "This BeerBiceps Ranveer episode has given a great chance for our politicians, leaders, and government to bring in legislation that can help moderate social media and OTT to safeguard our culture and country from hate, divisiveness, vulgarity, perversion, and propaganda seeded by many anti-national forces poisoning our youth minds," wrote Aravind a social media user whose posts have often accurately predicted future events.
There is a counter-view that the Beer Biceps issue should be laid to rest now that he has apologized. "How can anybody be arrested for speech, however obscene, degenerate, disgusting and vulgar it might be. Digital content has no certification. Movies are rated as 'A' but digital content has no such norm. Targeting one individual for a lapse of judgement is wrong," a commentator said.
