When Jailer was released in theatres and it became a blockbuster, not many appreciated the screenplay gimmick that proved to be its USP. The star cameos by Mohanlal, Shivarajkumar, and Jackie Shroff were clever. Each of the cameos was placed in such a way that Superstar Rajinikanth's lack of range didn't become too obvious. The gimmick paid off spectacularly. Anirudh's stylized music made it all look sexy.
Many suspect that Lokesh Kanagaraj secretly imitated the Jailer template in making Coolie. The cameos by Aamir Khan and Upendra are inorganic. It is possible that another major negative role was also an afterthought. It was meant to add star power.
For the next decade, star cameos will be the thing in Indian cinema in cases where the male lead feels he needs that padding. Rajini is in his 70s. He can't be doing gravity-defying stunts scene after scene. It would look ridiculous to see him do rope fights on repeat in the space of three hours. The Jailer model is what he will rely on.
As for other heroes/filmmakers, they will explore possibilities on a case-by-case basis. Star cameo appearances are relatively easy when the genre is not a serious action drama.
