In a recent chit-chat, Kalki 2898 AD director Nag Ashwin stated that he was depressed on watching the Trailer of the Hollywood classic Inception. That's because he had an idea resembling the central narrative within Inception. While Inception involved "dreams", Nag Ashwin's idea (originally conceived in 2008) involved "memories".
In Christopher Nolan's Inception, dreams are not just a backdrop, but the central playing field of the entire narrative. Dreams serve as a space where the characters can access and manipulate the subconscious minds of others. The film explores the idea that dreams can be meticulously constructed, with their own rules and physics, by "architects" like Ariadne. Dreams become a battleground for characters to confront their inner demons and unresolved emotional issues.
It would be interesting if Nag Ashwin were to develop his own version of Inception for a web series or a spin-off kind of a high-concept subject. But it is unlikely that he will do so at a time when Kalki 2 is going to consume the next three years of his career. If Kalki 2 becomes a hit, there is a possibility that Kalki 3 will be announced.
