Bollywood’s versatile actor Shammi Kapoor died on Sunday around 5.15 AM at Breach Candy hospital, where he was undergoing treatment for chest infection for the past couple of days. He was on dialysis and died on Sunday due to kidney failure. He was 79.
Hailing from a royal Kapoor family, Shammi Kapoor made his debut in Bollywood in 1953 and became popular through his performance in films like ‘Junglee’, ‘Janwar’, ‘Professor’, ‘Brahmachari’, Teesri Manzil’, ‘An Evening in Paris’, ‘Andaz’, ‘Vidhaata’, etc. While his father Prithviraj Kapoor was a well-known theater personality of 1950s, his brothers Raj Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor were also successful actors. The actor became very popular with his different body language and style in songs like ‘Chale Koi Mujhe Junglee Kahe’ and ‘Ahaa haa haa Aaja, Ahaa haa haa Aaja’.
Shammi Kapoor married the famous actress Geeta Bali in 1956 after birth of their son Aditya Raj Kapoor and in 1961, daughter Kanchen was born. After Geeta Bali died of small pox in 1965, he married his second wife Neela Gohil in 1969. He is now survived by his wife
Neela Gohil, son Aditya Raj Kapoor and daughter Kanchan. The funeral will take place on Monday morning.
Popular stars like Karishma Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor also belong to his family and are the grand children of his brother Raj Kapoor.
