'Saamanyudu' hit the cinemas today. Starring Vishal in the lead, it is the Telugu dubbed version of 'Veerame Vaagai Soodum' (Tamil).
Story
Porus (Vishal) is an idealistic youngster who wants to become a cop. His father is a constable and his sister Dwaraka (Raveena Ravi), a college student, is facing harassment from a street bully, who is related to a goonda. Porus and his family decide to take on the harasser but the same backfires. In a parallel track, a college student has been blackmailed by a spoilt brat (played by Raja Chembolu). In another track, an activist takes on the business mafia.
How these three tracks come together and what Porus does to avenge personal tragedy is what the rest of the story is about.
Performances
The film has average performances. When they are not melodramatic, the performances are engaging. This is a tailor-made character for Vishal, who was seen recently in 'Enemy'. Dimple Hayathi, who plays the hero's girlfriend, doesn't get much scope for performance.
Yogi Babu is routine, while Baburaj, G Marimuthu, VIS Jayapalan, and Elango Kumaravel are seen in different roles. Tulasi, who plays the hero's mother, didn't dub for her character.
Technical aspects
Yuvan Shankar Raja's music barely makes any mark. The BGM is mostly lost in the din of incoherent narration. Kavin Raj's cinematography is average. NB Srikanth has edited the movie. He could have trimmed the melodramatic and action portions. The film is nearly 166-minutes long. It's overlong and unbearably at that.
Analysis
The film is mainly a revenge action-drama where Vishal comes from an ordinary middle-class background. The stretch where three influential people try to negotiate with humble people is well-written. The emotions inherent to the stretch are worthy of mention.
But once the actual revenge segment takes off, the film fails to engage our attention. The writing is shoddy, and the narration doesn't keep us hooked. The second half is a complete letdown, with one wondering how so many coincidences are happening in the hero's life.
For a film like this one, the action scenes have to be unique. The fights are pretty average when they are not downright jaded. The romantic track is an absolute letdown.
Closing Remarks
'Saamanyudu' is an avoidable revenge action drama with nothing much to engage.
