St. Francis College for Women hosted the Annual Freshers Welcome for the year 2012. This year the new students of both UG and PG were part of the festivities. This year the theme for the event was 'Hall of Fame' where in the new batch of students had to dress up like the favourite celebrity. As the students entered they were asked to describe who they were dressed as and why they chose a specific celebrity to emulate.
The festivities began with the nightingales of the St. Francis Choir welcoming the new students with a special song. The Principal Dr. Sr. Alphonsa Vattoly then welcomed the students with warm words of appreciation along with some sound-advice for the future. There was then the first.of the three dance performances of the cultural programme which set the tone for what was to be a memorable afternoon with some foot tapping music.
The Emcees of the day Ankita Sharma, Satyavathi Ayyagari and Ankita Rajurkar had the audience in splits with their witty lines and repartees. The three of them had wonderful chemistry and it showed when they were completing each other's punch lines. The second dance number which was a tribute to the Dhak Dhak Queen, the original Diva Madhuri Dixit had the audience asking for an encore and acted as a perfect introduction to the most awaited event of the afternoon, the piece-de-resistance the Miss Freshers 2012. A part of the contest began online on Facebook as the general public voted for the photos of their favourite contestants for the title of Miss Fresh Face and Bakhita Francis of B.A, I A with 1,132 likes won that contest and Marika Gabriel also of B.A, I A came in a close second with 1, 06.5 likes.
The Miss Freshers 2012 had 12 contestants from the U.G batch (B.A I B. Corn/ B. Sc.) and 6 contestants from the P.G batch (M.A I M. Sc.) The first round kicked of'f with the contestants introducing themselves and showcasing their unique talent in the meagre two minutes or less time allotted to them. Judging these lovely ladies were Ms. Poornima Sharma, Marketing Manager, Annapurna International School of Film and Media (AISFM) (A finalist of the Miss Hyderabad 2011 Contest also winner of the Ms. Agra and Ms. Delhi titles earlier) and Ms. Shweta from the NGO Make a Difference (MAD) Foundation, who works towards educating underprivileged children.
To break the monotony of the contest proceedings was a humorous skit which had an interesting take on life of Freshers at the college and life in general for girls in their late teens. The perfect coordination of the contestants and their silken walk on the ramp was due to the efforts of student coordinators Samreen Ahmed and Soha Quadri who also doubled up as choreographers.
After the first round half the contestants were selected to go further to the second round which was the Judges Ouestion-and Answer Round. 6 contestants from the U.G batch and 3 contestants from the P.G batch were selected to face the judges for questioning. The P.G contestants were introduced by Krushita Adhia and Srujana who added some elegance to the proceedings. The reason for the contestants looking so fabulous was Avant Garde Life Magazine who generously lent their fashion expertise to the event apart from being the title sponsors. The event ended with a gala dance performance and the announcement of the winners of the Ms. Freshers 2012 Contest .
